Mats that stay where you put them

Measure the rug, not the room. A pad that reaches the fringe shows a grey line at the edge and catches a toe. Take an inch off each side and the pad disappears under the wool.

The two thicknesses do different jobs. The 1/8 in pad is for a rug that sits under a door or in front of a cabinet, where height matters more than cushion. The 1/4 in pad is for a room where people walk barefoot and the floor is hard.

The last column below is the one to read when two sizes look close in price. A 9 x 12 pad costs more than a 2 x 8 runner and buys four times the floor.

Waffle cotton is a woven grid. It dries fast because the grid holds air, and it keeps its shape after a wash. It is the mat to put where feet are damp rather than wet.

Chenille is a pile of soft loops. It takes far more water at once, which is what you want at a shower door or a tub. It also takes longer to dry, so it wants a hook or a rail rather than a folded stack.

Both fabrics sit on the same rubber back. Neither one is a bath rug for a bathroom with no ventilation: water that never leaves the room will find any pile eventually.

Resare began in 2016 with a complaint about a hallway. A wool runner walked itself two inches to the left every week, and the cure sold in shops was a sheet of sticky plastic that yellowed the floor by spring. The people behind Resare wanted the boring layer done properly: flat, quiet, and honest about how thick it is.

Felt came first because felt is the part that does the work. A dense felt sheet takes the step, keeps the pile from grinding into itself, and adds enough weight that the rug stops travelling. The grip face is there to hold the felt, not to glue the rug to the floor. That is why our pads come off a hardwood floor cleanly and why the range is cut to rug sizes rather than to round numbers.

The bath mats arrived next, from the same question asked in a smaller room. A mat at a shower door has one job and about four seconds to do it. We list the two fabrics side by side, with what each one is good at, instead of calling both of them soft.

Materials stayed short on purpose. Felt for pads, natural rubber for the mats that live outdoors, woven cotton and chenille for the rooms with water in them. Four materials cover four floors, and a buyer can hold the whole range in their head while they choose.

Four departments cover the floors people ask about most: under a rug, at the shower, outside the front door, in front of the sink. The team keeps a size in the range while people keep buying it, and drops it when they stop. Nothing here is seasonal.

Every card carries the numbers the decision needs. Size in the units the product is sold in, thickness where thickness exists, the fabric, the colour, the price from our last update, and for pads the price per square foot. Where a figure is not published, the card says nothing rather than guessing.

What Resare does not make is the rug itself. There is no wool, no vintage print, no eight by ten in three colourways. The Resare view is that a floor layer should be quiet under something else, and that is a full job for a small range.

Sizes come from rooms rather than from a catalogue plan. A 2 x 8 runner exists because hallways are that shape, and a 17 x 27 in bath mat exists because that is the space in front of a basin in a flat. When a size sells for two seasons it stays. When it sits, it goes, and the space in the range goes to a size people ask for.

The name is a plain one and the range is a plain one. Resare pieces are meant to be the layer nobody comments on: the rug stops sliding, the tile stops being cold and wet, the porch stops arriving in the hall. If a mat here is doing its work, the room looks the same as it did before, only quieter underfoot.
